Assignment One: Introductory Paragraph

Hi and welcome to our course! Please remember that one of the benefits of a blogging course is to have communication between participants. Remember to read and respond to other participants' comments each week. We look forward to working and learning with you. Please try to keep your responses within one allotted "comment" space to ensure that the blog remains manageable for all participants.

Also, you may want to type your comments in a Word Document and either copy from Word and paste onto the blog or save it in a folder on your computer and then post it to the blog. I have written a couple of lengthy comments that I lost before I was able to post it to the blog. This extra step may save you some frustration later on this term.

Last of all, we will write our comments to your posts on the blog, so you will need to check back to the corresponding week for feedback (and to make additional comments if you wish.)

Let us know if you have any questions. You can email us, but please put the words "Question for Classroom Instruction" in the subject line so that we can respond in a timely fashion.

Assignment #1: Introductory paragraph.
Please post your introduction to the course blog in the blog archive under the posting: Week One: Introduction - Please tell us a little about yourself. Where do you teach? What grade and how long have you been teaching? How many students are in your class and do you have instructional support? What does your current literacy program look like? (If you aren’t currently teaching let us know what your educational background and experiences are.) What is your knowledge/training in the area of literacy? Does your district provide literacy training? If so, what exactly have they offered? Also, let us know a little about you outside the classroom: Interests/ Hobbies/ Family Life.

Also please read: Classroom Instruction that Works - Chapter 1 – Applying the Research on Instruction: An Idea Whose Time Has Come

My name is Louise Frewing. I have been teaching in the Gresham-Barlow School District for 19 years. For the first ten years I taught middle school humanities and the last nine I have been teaching 4th and 5th grade. Next year I will be teaching 35 3rd graders, and hope to eventually move from there down to kindergarten. I like to spend my spare time hanging out with my family and friends, hiking and walking with my dog, and working in my yard.

Our most recent district literacy program is Literacy by Design. All the recent literacy training I have had has been how to implement this program.I am very interested in learning additional strategies to actively involve my students in literacy and further motivate them to want to WANT to learn.

Hello Louise! Welcome to class! I am also interested in Kindergarten and Pre-K. I've taught 1, 2, 3, 4 as a classroom teacher, grades 5 and 6 for math and high school as a librarian. Now that my children are school age I have a real passion for early education. As I librarian, I love literacy and supporting the students and teachers with all things that are related to literacy. We look forward to working with you this summer.

Week 1 Introduction: Hi! My name is Margaret Goff. I just finished my 20th year of teaching. I started in southern California and am currently teaching in the Parkrose School District where I have taught a variety of grades from Kindergarten through 7th grade. Kindergarten is my true passion and I have been teaching it for the past five years. For the upcoming school year I have moved back up to 2nd grade where I will have a classroom of about 25 students (some of which I had in kindergarten!) I will have instructional support for my reading block and my writing block. Our current literacy program is Literacy By Design with a Daily 5 structure. We have had some District training with regards to our new literacy program but due to cuts our training has been minimal. I have a Reading and Language Arts Masters and Specialist Credential and reading is truly my passion, that is why I love teaching kindergarten so much! My husband is also a teacher so we enjoy traveling during the summer and try to get out of the country as much as we can to emerge ourselves in other cultures. I have pug named Olive and we love to walk, hike and enjoy the outdoors as much as possible!

Hello Margaret! Welcome to class. How wonderful that you'll be able to have some of your same students from kindergarten. :D I'm sure they are excited as well. Literacy is also Jackie and my passion. :D In fact Jackie has taken a new position in her district where she can focus solely on literacy. I wish my husband had the same schedule as teachers, it's wonderful to travel during the breaks. We love traveling as well but since we've had children, almost 8 years ago, it's been put on hold. We look forward to working with you this summer.

This is my third year teaching 6th grade at Astoria Middle School. My wife, Jenny, of 10 years and I love the coast. We have one wish, fewer clouds. We left our home of 5 years in Sherwood and moved to the Oregon Coast, where it is apparently never sunny. We live in Seaside which is a 16 mile drive to Astoria. I am active: walk, bike, coach, play guitar, photographer, reader, gamer, Green Bay Packer fan, husband, and I love to travel, somewhere in there I am a teacher.
After working in private school for 3 years, I worked in Oregon City for 2 years before I was hired by Astoria Middle School to teach 6th grade. Because of leveling for reading, my Writing & Reading classes were different groups of students. I was able to use The Daily 5 with my Homeroom kids & Story Town in Reading classes first 2 years. I am now in my 8th year of teaching, 6 of those years with the 6th grade. My classes this year were 33 Accelerated Math, 26 Math, 12 Math intervention, 26 Social Studies, and 27 Social Studies. I leaned heavily on cooperative teams and used elements of The Daily 5 where I could fit them.
I am currently in my 3rd week of teaching Summer school to a rambunctious crew of twenty-two pre-7th grade students at Astoria Middle school. I am using the Daily 5 classroom with Reading, Writing and Math focused I-charts for the next 3 weeks. Building up student stamina is our first and primary goal to facilitate learning next year.

Hi Sam! We're happy to have you join our class this summer. Yes, the Coast is beautiful but a bit cloudy. But when those days come along with bluebird sky, it's amazing!!! I actually, when I lived in Oregon, enjoyed going to the Coast in the winter. I liked the solitude and gray days where you just settled down with a good book, tea and a fire.

Jackie and I are big fans of The Sisters. Good luck with your summer schoolers. :) Make sure to take some time and enjoy your summer.
