Hello,

My name is Grace Grieve and I teach 4th grade at Highland Elementary in Gresham, Oregon. I have been teaching at the same grade for eight years. This year I have 24 students, 10 of which are English Language Learners. My ELL students leave the classroom for 45 minutes a day. I also have a chunk of kids that are below grade level, that leave the classroom for reading intervention. My kiddos are constantly coming and going (very frustrating and difficult to get anything done) My students that are on grade level stay in the classroom with me and we use our reading adoption along with Frist Steps and the Daily 5 Routine. I have been married 30 years and have 3 adult children that I am trying to launch.... We enjoy performing as a family at dinner shows and playhouses.

Hi Grace - welcome to our course! We seem to get off to a very slow start...we still haven't gotten a course list as to who is enrolled yet...so far you're it :) I feel your pain of having your students pulled from your classroom so constantly - it makes it near impossible for you to get your own teaching done. I'm in a new position this year...a reading consultant in a building - but my primary focus is intervention - a pull out model, and I HATE it!!! I switched districts, and prior to this year, I was a literacy coach, where all of my work was in the classroom with both teachers and students....I loved it!!! I'm working hard on trying to make a change in my new district....wish me luck!!! I love The Sisters and their Daily 5 and CAFE!! What a unique family you seem to have...how fun to be able to perform together. Thanks for joining our class - hopefully we'll hear from others soon!

Hello.
My name is Paula Bjork and I teach 1st grade at Tualatin Elementary in Tualatin, Oregon. I have 27 students and an ELL assistant that comes 3 times a week for one hour to help during math. We are a Title I school so we have lots of reading interventions going on and we all (1st-5th) regroup for reading class by instructional levels. Our K/1 reading program is Fast Track Phonics/MacMillan (very dry/scripted).
I just finished your class, Reading Essentials by Regie Routman, so I've been busy revamping my reading class according to Regie's suggestions on "Best Reading Practices."
I've been a classroom teacher for about 20 years and taught K, 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7-8th Remedial Reading & HS GED for Drug & Alchol Kids. I was a a Literacy Specialist for Tigard-Tualatin School Dist. for 2 years but my heart was in the classroom.
My interests include hiking, backpacking, fishing, spending time with my 3 grandchildren and my best friend John.

Hi Paula - welcome to this course also!!! I'm glad that we have another participant for some conversation. Two others who took the course "this semester" needed early grades and had to hand in their coursework in early via email.
